4 weeks to a stronger heart

Article published in Ladies Home Journal, April 2009

4 weeks to a stronger heart – it is true. A few simple lifestyle strategies can make a huge difference to your health.
…Give your heart a healthy makeover! With just a few painless changes you can significantly lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, prevent your arteries from narrowing and strengthen your blood vessels…
Absolutely! It is never too late, well as long as you are still breathing and your heart is still beating that is. I fully agree with the statement that you can change a lot in just 4 weeks, even though it is a stretch for many. The hard part is to stay in the change, make it become you and don’t fall back into old habits and comfort levels.

The reason to why I am even commenting this article is because it is in a magazine that people read, that people read and sometimes act upon. I feel that it is important that we provide the general public with the true and latest research available to us, not something that was published 20 years ago, no matter what media form it is in.

[printed in magazine] [my own comments]

Change the way you eat
The long-touted low-fat diet is yesterday’s news. The latest nutrition research suggests that maintaining your arterial superhighway is not just about avoiding as much saturated fat and processed food as possible but also about fueling your tank with what many experts call “functional foods,” those foods rich in nutrients with powerful heart-protecting (and anticancer) properties. “Focusing on low fat is overly simplistic,” says Christopher Gardner, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine at the Prevention Research Center at the Stanford University School of Medicine. “When you combine natural high-fiber foods with plant sterols and unsaturated fats, you start to see cholesterol-lowering benefits.”

They are absolutely right. The 80’s low fat, high carb diet is out the door and replaced with a high natural fat and high protein intake. Unfortunately this article goes on by giving examples of what to eat, such as; wheat, cereals, bread, juice, and margarine! This to me is insane. The only way to lower your cholesterol and triglycerides is to quit eating any type of wheat and grains, lower other sugar intake such as juices and fruits, eat real natural fats such as butter, olive oil, canola oil, nuts, and avocado – NOT MARGARINE – margarine is only one molecule away from being plastic (but that is another story). Who can even make such a recommendation in a heart health article?! I would never recommend margarine to anyone, under any circumstances. Butter is real, margarine is not – it doesn’t get easier than that.

As far as the wheat and grain elimination – it might seem very strange to some, because the majority of us have grown up believing that whole wheat and grains are supposed to be healthy for us. Well the truth is that most grains contain way too much sugar for it to be beneficial. Why don’t you look for yourself? Go and get your bread package and read how many grams of carbohydrates you have in there, and then find out how much of it is sugar and how much of it is fiber… the rest is usually other gluten kinds that also is a harm to your heart health. What did you find? That the sugar outnumbers the fiber? You will find the same illustration on most bread you pick up.

Fill up on fiber
Only one type of fiber helps your heart – the viscous, or soluble, kind found in foods such as beans, oats, oat bran, barley, citrus fruits, eggplant, and okra…

You know what, most humans don’t even get half as much fiber as we should in our daily diet and my suggestion is to supplement it, at least four times a year as a fiber cleanse. But healthy fibers are found in green vegetables as well and are a much better choice than the oats and oat bran.

Cut the salt
If you’ve got pre- or full-blown hypertension, consider trying the low-sodium diet recommended by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. It’s rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and includes poultry, fish, nuts and whole grains but only small amounts of red meat, sweets and sugary drinks.

Please change this header to – Change your salt. It is not the amounts of salt; it is what kind of salt! Many say to cut the salt… but let’s think for just a moment. When you are being hospitalized what is the first thing they will give you? Something called NaCl, right in your arm into your blood stream… What is NaCl? NaCl stands for Sodium (Natrium) Chloride and is simply the chemical name for SALT!!! Plain SALT!!! We need salt to survive, plain and simple. The hard part is to get the right kind. Unprocessed salt is the way to go - most likely found in health food and holistic food stores. Once you have the right kind of salt – please salt away! Another mistake that is made in the “cut the salt” process; people cut the intake of Iodine as well. Iodine is not salt, but some salt labels can be bought with iodine and without iodine. Iodine must be supplemented if it is not taken in another way, as it is another life supporting mineral. Don’t cut the salt – change it!

But with this diet you are sure to keep your hypertension and gain some pounds, increase you cholesterol, and increase your blood pressure. The only thing I am happy to read is that they want you to avoid sugary drinks – and that includes all juices out there, light or not. As far as the low-fat dairy products: yes it is low fat, but the lower the fat the higher the carbohydrates. The carbohydrates in dairy products are lactose – lactose is another name for sugar, milk sugar. So to say that you should limit your sugary drinks and then to say that you should drink lots of milk doesn’t really add up, to me.

When Medication Makes Sense
Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, diet and exercise don’t get you where you need to be. Talk to your doctor about whether one of these meds is right for you.

Well, if you keep getting the wrong guidelines, how on earth are you supposed to reach your goals? These guidelines are set so that the medical companies can reach their goals – not yours.

Drugs that lower your cholesterol
Statins – the best – known type – do a remarkable job of lowering LDL cholesterol, healing the lining of the arteries and slowing the build up of plaque. If you already have heart disease, these drugs can reduce your risk of dying from heart attack by 29 percent.

I don’t think I have to go there, but Statins are still drugs with many side effects. They are known to lower your bad LDL cholesterol, but they will also lower your good HDL cholesterol. Stay with the high natural fat and protein diet limited from wheat, grain, fruit, dairy, sugar, and juices and you should be on good way to reaching your goal. To speed up the process you need to supplement with natural Omega 3, Vitamin C, EDTA, Vitamin D3, L-Arginine, OPCs, and Magnesium.

Statins, however have little effect on HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, another blood fat. For those you may need to take prescription niacin, fibrate drugs or FDA-approved fish oil supplements, which can increase HDL by up to 30 percent and lower triglycerides by as much as 45 percent depending on the drug.

This is correct about Niacin, which is simply Vitamin B3. What is wrong is that you do NOT need to get a prescription to get it; Niacin can be found on the nutrition shelf at your supermarket. There are many kinds of Niacin, and I would avoid “no blush Niacin” as it will not do you any good, just as the slow acting Niacin. To reach preferred levels of triglycerides someone might have to supplement niacin a lot – something that should be supervised by a doctor, he/she should at least be aware that you are doing it. Start at 250 mg per day for one week and increase it with 250 mg each week until you have reached a level of 1000 mg. If your triglycerides and LDL are very high you might have to supplement with up to 5000 mg per day say William Davis M.D. in his article “Using Niacin to improve cardiovascular health”. The supplementation does not have to be FDA approved either. FDA often approves synthetic drugs before they approve natural made supplements. Why? Well that is another discussion, but let’s just say that FDA work closely with the drug companies, not the natural supplementation companies. As long as your Omega 3 is natural you are good to go. And you should take 3000-4000 mg per day to see any progress.

Pills can help your heart grow stronger
Yes – as long as you take the right ones.

Numbers you need to know
“A strong heart needs healthy blood vessels that have smooth, Teflon-like lining,” explains John P. Cooke, M.D., Ph.D., associate director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. “This lets blood move easily, not clot.”
True! And John P. Cooke is a personal favorite of mine – what this section forgets to mention is how you can make your vessels become like Teflon. What John P. Cook is talking about is L-Arginine, one of our most powerful natural occurring amino acid. L-arginine converts into nitric oxide when in your body and makes all that come true. He also suggests that we need to supplement with 5 grams of Arginine every day to get the nitric oxide effect.

This article was a very good attempt to make the public more aware, but it was a shame that L-arginine wasn’t mentioned even once. L-arginine alone could fill up page after page with great research and progress. The public need to know more about l-arginine, the public need to know that the people who discovered the nitric oxide effect derived from l-arginine won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998, the public need to know that l-arginine can change lives!

I would also suggest that in the future facts should be taken from Nutritionists and Holistic doctors as well as medical doctors interested in health care. It is also a shame that the readers have to look at a Crestor (medication for high cholesterol) add in the middle of the article. It kind of makes it look like AstraZeneca made the report…

Thank you for listening.
Looking forward for more heart health reading

Doctor vs Patient

Have you ever heard the word “cure” in a doctors’ office?
I haven’t. In fact I went to the doctor once this past year because I had my mouth and throat full with small blisters and I wanted to see if they were a bacterial infection or just a cold virus… I had been sick for about 3 days before my husband actually called the doctors’ office in my place since I had completely lost my voice.
The blisters made me unable to eat anything except for ice cream… making me very tired and my energy was drained to the bottom just by driving to the doctor.

In the doctors’ office I felt very dizzy and asked to lie down on the bed that I was sitting on in the examination room. That was fine and he took my blood pressure, which I am sure was a little bit low. He finally got to my mouth and my throat, looked for a few seconds and then turned around and started writing a prescription for some antibiotics!!!! I could almost not believe what I was seeing… unable to speak I couldn’t even confront him with it. I wanted to ask him why he wanted to give me antibiotics without even having done a throat swab or blood test to check if my condition was due to a virus or a bacterial infection…

I was left with the same question that I had walked to the office with; no answers just dumb founded about my doctors’ actions…

The decision was now up to me… Should I take the antibiotics or not?!
Well at this time I was so tired that I didn’t have energy to go the pharmacy so I went straight home and went to bed. I probably slept for two hours without even changing position. After waking up I decided that I was going to wait and see what happened over the next two days since most soar throats usually lasts for 5 days and there is NOTHING antibiotics can do about it. If the blisters were still grabbing on to my throat after those 5 days I would take the antibiotics…

Luckily I was right to trust my instincts – it must have been a virus infection, because in two more days the blisters were gone and I was back at being my normal self, without the antibiotics. The question that is still in my head is off course what my doctor wanted to accomplish; was he looking to be the hero, curing me from my soar throat knowing that it would past with or without drugs, or was he just trying to sell more medicine to climb the commission latter??? I still don’t know, but I will for sure, if I ever have to go back there question every singe diagnose he makes. I will never trust him!

Health Care is today plain and simple SICK CARE!
The health (sick) industry makes money on you being sick – why in the world would they want to cure you???!! That is just not profitable enough!
They will keep you sick or tell you that you are sick to keep you in the loop and helping the drug companies reach their goal of 10 prescriptions per person…

Disgusting? YES!
True? YES!
Something we can do about it? YES!

Have a wonderful and healthy afternoon!

Warning: Your cardiologist may be hazardous to your health!

Copyright 2009 Track Your Plaque, LLC

When you put your life into the hands of a stranger, you might be entrusting it to someone who has one thing in mind: How to profit from the experience. Perhaps you gain health from it, perhaps not -- that’s not the point, sadly. Understand this sad fact and modern healthcare suddenly makes sense.

Here is Laurie’s chilling story of her near-fatal brush with Dr. Aldesani.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

At approximately 5:40 am, I was struck with chest pain. My husband, Ray, drove me to a nearby hospital where I was given oxygen and a cardiac workup.

Eventually, I met Dr. Aldesani and he told me that I had suffered a heart attack and would need to have cardiac catheterization to locate the blockage and put in a stent. When I voiced my concern about putting in an unnecessary stent, he became agitated and said if I didn’t let him put a stent in, I would just have another heart attack.

While Dr. Aldesani was gone, I asked a nurse if I could get a second opinion from another cardiologist, but he said they would have to talk to Dr. Aldesani first because they couldn’t go behind his back.

When Dr. Aldesani returned I asked him again what the risks of this procedure were and if there were other options. He became even more agitated and would only tell me that I need to have the procedure done. He said, “Now listen, I don’t want to waste your time, and you don’t want to waste my time, so what do you want to do?

It made me feel uncomfortable. I felt as if he only wanted me to speak when spoken to and that he was offended that I was question his judgment. I asked if there was another cardiologist that I could talk to. Not wanting to anger him further, I said it was nothing against him but that I never had any kind of surgery before and I would just feel better if I got a second opinion from another doctor. Dr. Aldesani acquiesced and called in Dr. Steve Cutler.

Dr. Cutler arrived and, after asking me a number of questions, said that he thought the cardiac catheterization should be done. I asked if he could do the procedure instead of Dr. Aldesani, but Dr. Cutler said he wasn’t licensed to do so. I then asked him what Dr. Aldesani’s record was with the procedure and Dr. Cutler hesitated, lowered his head and said, “I think you should ask Dr. Aldesani that.”

I now feel that I should have trusted my initial instincts, but there was no one else available to do the procedure and both doctors had me convinced that, if I didn’t have this procedure done soon, I could die. I signed a paper, consenting to the procedure and agreeing that if something went wrong, they had the right to do an emergency bypass procedure.

Later, I was lying on a flat metal surface. I was lucid and felt relatively comfortable (considering the circumstances). A small screen was to my left, and I could hear Dr. Aldesani’s voice as he pointed out a blockage in my artery. He said, “I can pull it out with a wire.” Then, his voice rose, becoming unexpectedly aggressive. He said, “So what do you think, should I take it out?” Now bellowing, “You’re so smart! What do YOU think I should do? Do you want a second opinion?!“

I felt completely vulnerable and powerless as he mocked and ridiculed me with the questions I had asked him hours earlier. His unpredictable and threatening behavior in the midst of performing my heart procedure scared me deeply. I was terrified of what he might do.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008; 7:30 pm

Dr. Aldesani told my family that “there was a complication” and we learned that a healthy artery had been dissected during the procedure. At this point, he told my family that he would like to have me taken to a facility where open heart surgery would be available should I need it.

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

At approximately 9:00 am the next morning, surgeon Dr. Hector O’Hanley told my family that the artery wasn’t healing and a lifesaving open heart surgery was needed or I would die.

Later that day, at approximately 2:30 pm, I had double bypass surgery.

Track Your Plaque, LLC; Editor's Comments:

In the midst of an emergency, or, in this case, what appears to be a pseudo-emergency, we sometimes have to submit to the judgment and abilities of the people around us. We usually trust hospitals and doctors to do what is in our best interest, particularly when we are at our most vulnerable.

If Laurie could replay this unfortunate scene again from the start, here’s some advice I’d offer:

I asked a nurse if I could get a second opinion from another cardiologist, but he said they would have to talk to Dr. Aldesani first because they couldn’t go behind his back.

There is no such rule. The patient has a right to another opinion, whether or not the primary doctor approves. The nurse would have an obligation to notify the primary doctor that a second opinion is being sought, but it is entirely within the patient’s rights to obtain another opinion.

When Dr. Aldesani returned I asked him again what the risks of this procedure were and if there were other options. He became even more agitated and would only tell me that I need to have the procedure done.

Unacceptable. Everyone deserves an explanation about the procedure they are about to undergo. If Laurie had been critically ill, delirious, or not in full possession of her faculties, then the healthcare provider must simply act in the patient’s best interests. But to deny a description of the risks of a procedure just because she “really needed to have it” (if that was true) is simply unacceptable.

At that point, Laurie could have 1) insisted, 2) demanded a second opinion, whether or not Dr. Aldesani agreed, or 3) demanded transfer to another hospital if she knew of a doctor who would accept her as a patient (which is usually not difficult).

I asked if [Dr. Cutler] could do the procedure instead of Dr. Aldesani, but Dr. Cutler said he wasn’t licensed to do so.

This was a clear set-up by Dr. Aldesani. He sent someone in who was likely to agree with him (probably for political reasons) and who (purportedly) was unable to perform the procedure in his place.

This is a difficult situation. However, possibilities for handling it better include 1) identifying a second opinion source yourself with the assistance of friends, family, and nurses (who can be an extremely useful resource); 2) if the second opinion of Dr. Aldesani were accepted, asking why he chose who he did and asking both Dr. Aldesani and Dr. Cutler what their relationship was (partners, friends, etc.).

I now feel that I should have trusted my initial instincts, but there was no one else available to do the procedure and both doctors had me convinced that, if I didn’t have this procedure done soon, I could die.

Dr. Aldesani used the tried-and-true tactic of cardiologists everywhere: Scare them to death, then “save” their lives with a procedure. Sometimes it’s true, often it’s not. While Laurie may indeed have required a procedure, it was hardly the dire situation painted by the doctors.

Why do they use this tactic? Many reasons: It abbreviates the conversation, since patients become eager to have the procedure. (Proceduralists hate talking to patients.) It tends to pre-empt any liability if the procedure goes sour, since it was “necessary to save her life.” Lastly, it increases procedural volume, since just about anyone is unable to endure the fear of being told they were going to die without the procedure.

I felt completely vulnerable and powerless as he mocked and ridiculed me with the questions I had asked him hours earlier. His unpredictable and threatening behavior in the midst of performing my heart procedure scared me deeply.

Too late. Laurie was trapped, a victim of the unprofessional, inexcusable behavior of Dr. Aldesani. At this point, she had no recourse - partly sedated - with catheters inserted in her body.

[Dr. Aldesani] told my family that he would like to have me taken to a facility where open heart surgery would be available should I need it.

A non-emergent procedure being performed at a facility with no surgical backup? While clinical trials have confirmed that emergency angioplasty during an ongoing myocardial infarction (heart attack) can be safely performed in such “no backup” hospitals with equivalent results to that obtained in a hospital with surgical backup, there are limited data to support non-emergent angioplasty. In fact, some data suggest that mortality is doubled: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/extract/321/7272/1308

The fact that no surgical backup was available and the likelihood of adverse outcomes should have been fully disclosed prior to Laurie’s catheterization. There was no way for Laurie to have known this. But, Dr. Aldesani’s intractable reluctance to discuss the procedure concealed this crucial fact.

Learn from Laurie’s unfortunate experience. Having met Laurie, I can see how this sweet, accepting woman could have been bullied into a procedure. Don’t let it happen to you.

There is a time and place for procedures. When the situation permits, it is your right to receive 1) an adequate explanation of a medical procedure, its risks, benefits, and alternatives, 2) a second opinion if you are dissatisfied with the first, and 3) humane treatment regardless of differences of opinion.

Laurie and her attorney have since filed a lawsuit against Dr. Aldesani, who continues to operate a busy practice.

Cardiologist excited about results

By Leroy Coast

In 1994 I suffered my first heart attack. At that time, angioplasty was performed and extensive cardiac rehabilitation was done. I met a friend who introduced me to natural products, and my rehabilitation reports were looking good. I was able to keep the disease at bay by taking large amounts of natural products, but eventually pill fatigue won and I substantially reduced the amounts of products I was taking. In 2004 I had another heart attack and stints were used as the solution. I was totally disabled with arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

A friend introduced me to arginine. A few months later I had an examination by my cardiologist, and he was excited about my improvement and the fact that I was using arginine. He performed a scan on me and could not find any calcification or plaque in my heart. My stints were clear, and he indicated that I could have the knee replacement that I needed.

My King of Pop

Jackson, who fought long-running battles with prescription medication throughout his career, was taking the drugs after suffering injuries during training for his comeback, lawyer and spokesman Brian Oxman said.

Oxman told CNN that he had harboured concerns about Jackson's use of drugs, saying members of the star's entourage were "enablers'' and comparing his case to the drug overdose death of Playboy centrefold Anna-Nicole Smith.

"This is not something that has been unexpected... because of the medications which Michael was under,'' Oxman said from the hospital where Jackson's family members had gathered.

"The people who have surrounded him have been enabling him... if you think that the case of Anna-Nicole Smith was an abuse, it was nothing to what we have seen in Michael Jackson's life."

I hope that everyone can read through the lines here and see that the cause of his cardiac arrest was not to try to get in shape for his upcoming tour, but the cause of years of heavy medications and who knows, maybe unhealthy living. So to all of you out there. Please listen to the side effects and try to find other ways to reach good health then by taking the Rx.

As a fan of the King of Pop ~ I hope you have found peace, you will be missed, but never lost.

A sensitive subject

It seems that as soon as I mention ED and some of our markets most popular drugs, prescribed to treat or hide the disorder I get emails after emails from people wondering if it is true or not, and from people trying to sell me some Viagra… Selling Viagra or even trying to sell it to me makes me laugh. I just want to say “didn’t you just read what I wrote”? But I guess as long as the word ED is in there… people attack like hungry sharks. And I understand – Sex is important! And selling something that, according to the advertisements, can improve your sex life has to be fun!

Well this blog isn’t about promoting Viagra, Cialis, or any other drug produced by drug companies. This is about a healthier way of life – nothing else.

So let’s do this again, let’s learn about ED and let’s learn about how we can do something about it in another way than talking to your doctor about possible drugs (with side effects).

Penile erection occurs as a result of increased blood flow to the penis, engorgement with blood, and decreased outflow of blood from the penis. Primarily, this process is mediated by nitric oxide, which is a neurotransmitter and vasodilator. ED may be caused by different factors such as physical illness, medicinal treatments, or psychological effects. In many cases men with ED will be prescribed to try one of the drugs on the market, such as Viagra or Cialis. These drugs works by blocking the enzyme called phosphodiesterase (the enzyme that normally works by “letting the erection go” after the sex act). In other words these drugs will never treat the issue, just make it work for the moment.

When taking drugs we all have to worry about side effects, effects that sometimes seem worse than the illness itself… And what most people don’t know about Viagra is this:

Once FDA approved Viagra, Pfizer reported sales of 30,000 prescriptions the first week, 110,000 the second week and a total of 350,000 prescriptions filled by the end of the very first month. WOW!!! Viagra is a gold mine – better yet diamonds! However people die for diamonds too – in its first year of sales FDA reported that Viagra had 1473 adverse events including:

- 255 serious heart rhythm disturbances
- 53 episodes of congestive heart failure
- 119 strokes
- 517 heart attacks
- 522 deaths!

Yes you read it – 522 deaths in its first year on the market! (Remember the big fuss about ephedra? FDA pulled this natural product off the market because there were 155 assumes deaths reported over a 10-year period. Where none of the deaths were actually proven to be caused from taking ephedra and its synthetic twin ephedrine remains on the market today. Sometimes you might wonder whom the FDA is working for.)

http://www.greathealth-tour.com/Arginine%20The%20Love%20Potion.pdf

So considering these side effects from taking these drugs many men choose to do nothing, and that is sad too! There are natural ways to improve your sex life without any horrible side effects; in fact supplementing with Arginine might improve other functions as well!

NaturalSexPower.com says this about Arginine and ED:

…These risks are one of the reasons why men are looking for alternative treatments. L-arginine is one of the most beneficial of these alternatives. L-arginine is widely supported by the Nobel Prize committee and other notable individuals. This is due to the fact that it has such a large range of benefits. Not only does it open the arteries and produce adequate blood flow which is necessary for proper erectile functioning; it also adds essential benefits to your life. The use of L-arginine has been embraced by physicians, researchers and scientists because of its benefits to such things as heart disease, adiposity-generated diseases, immune function, high blood pressure, human aging, and of course sexual dysfunction. However, the list of benefits goes much further.
You can find the full article here:
http://www.naturalsexualpower.com/articles/how_does_l-arginine_m2_relate_to_sexual_dysfunction.php

Researches say this:

- Arginine alleviates male impotence by stimulating the production of nitric oxide, the endogenous chemical that stimulates erections in males.
- Arginine alleviates male infertility by improving sperm count and sperm motility due to its involvement in the manufacture of endogenous spermidine.
- Arginine enhances male and female sexual desire (libido)
- Arginine enhances female sexual performance due to its role in the production of nitric oxide production in the clitoris, nitric oxide facilitates female orgasm in the clitoris.
- Arginine improves male sexual performance by providing nitrogen to the nitric oxide molecule that is integral to the achievement of erections – Arginine produces erections that are bigger, harder, and more frequent. It also increases male sexual endurance.
- Arginine improves sperm count and sperm motility
- Arginine may improve prostate function
- Arginine deficiency can cause atrophy of the testicles of the testes.
- Arginine cure ED – 80% of men with erectile dysfunction treated with L-arginine and antioxidants recovered from their erectile dysfunction after one month of treatment

E-mail me and I will send you a list of references; Helena@mi4u.org

Arginine works by releasing nitric oxide that triggers the release of c-GMP, which is a molecule that causes engorgement of this tissue. Arginine releases nitric oxide to make sure there is plenty of c-GMP.

So are you or someone you love suffering from ED?
Don’t you think it is time you tried a natural product for once?

Email me and I will tell you all about some wonderful products that you can be 100% confident in that it is actually 100% natural. If you rather look on your own; make sure you find a product that contains 5 grams of Arginine in each dose, 200mg of Citruline and antioxidants! As they will work in harmony with each other!

Good luck and take care of yourself!
